Baby Pinwheels
One of the ladies in the Friday Finishing Club recently closed her quilt shop. Several weeks ago she brought in bins full of FQ and told us we could have whatever we wanted, but that we had to make at least one top for her church's charity mission in Africa. Fine by me. I snagged a lot of the 1930s reproductions and was able, with the addition of some white fabric, to make two identical tops from this pattern.
I gave them to her last Friday. Now her husband, who has the long arm business, will quilt them up.

Here is another block in the Hugs & Kisses BOM. I am so behind -- I have two more blocks to prep and it is almost July so there will be another. I guess it keeps me out of trouble.

The Dragon

| Janet's Dragon by Barbara Caves, Colorado |
On Saturday, I went to Quilt Colorado 2010 in Estes Park with four other ladies. MagicLady and I go to quilt shows together and we have a routine that fits us. We always start by viewing the quilts and we will stop and discuss pros and cons and techniques and exclaim over each quilt. It takes us a while to get through a quilt show. Only after we view all the quilts do we then go to the vendors mall.
Two of the other ladies hit the vendor's mall first and if they even saw the quilt show I'd be surprised. Halfway through the quilts, the fifth lady came up to us and said everybody was waiting for us in the lobby of the hotel. O dear! We rushed through the rest of the quilts and essentially bypassed the vendor mall. Sadly, this is the only photo I took. After whizzing through the rest of the show, we found the ladies in the lobby resting their feet, not 'waiting' on us. O well. *shrug*
I think I've mentioned that I collect dragons. This one is exceptionally well done and by someone here in my home town!

Whiter Than Snow
No one knew what triggered the Swandyke avalanche that began at exactly 4:10 p.m. on April 20, 1920. It might have been the dynamite charge that was set off at the end of shift on the upper level of the Fourth of July Mine. The miners claimed the blast was too far inside the mountain to be felt on the surface, and besides, they had set off dynamite hundreds, maybe thousands of times before, and nothing bad had happened. Except for that one time when a charge failed to go off and Howard Dolan hit it with his pick when he was mucking out the stope and blew himself and his partner to kingdom come.
Still, who knew how the old mountain took retribution for having its insides clawed out.
Certainly, there was nothing to suggest that the day was different from any other. It started chill and clear
The above is an excerpt from Sandra Dallas' latest book "Whiter Than Snow". If you follow the link you can read a little more of the excerpt. I have been offered a copy of the book to review on my blog and I'll give you a full report after I've read it.

The Quilter Quilts
Several requests came through to show the quilting on the recent Quilts of Valor. I quilt on my home sewing machine which is an older Bernina 1080 QE. It has no stitch regulator like the newer models, but she and I understand each other.

Rainy Weekend Stuff

We've had a storm front stalled over the area for 3 days. Rain in the lower elevations and snow (SNOW!) in the mountains. Staying indoors resulted in lots of prep work:
- Made up two kits of this pattern from the Moda Bake Shop. As luck would have it I have twenty-four 30's reproduction FQ given to me so I was able to cut out 2 kits and I hope there is enough left for a pieced binding. Isn't that just the cutest pattern? Love the prairie points.
- EQ7 Upgrade arrived on Friday and got installed. I'm sad because there's been no time to play with it.
- Finished up another applique block in the Hugs and Kisses BOM but need to take a photo. But I am still two blocks behind and did not get any more prepped.
- While I was cutting kits, I cut two more for donation baby quilts using some panels.
- And then remembered two more panels in the stash and dug them out. I cut one more kit this morning from one panel and the other panel went into the garage sale items. It was of a rainbow trout that could be either made into a fish shaped pillow or appliqued onto something else.

Disappearing 9 Patch Quilt of Valor
The last of the Quilts of Valor has been quilted. A veritable quilting marathon has been happening at Casa del Quilter.
This quilt was held for last because it needed quilting that was NOT allover. Each block was quilted individually with a flower whose petal's resembled hearts, the first sashing was quilted with 'E' and the white sashings were quilted in a wave. I am pleased with the result even if it took twice as long as the other two QOV.
All three QOV quilts were quilted on my domestic sewing machine.

Simple Squares Quilt of Valor
Charm packs sometimes stifle me. I want to make something much more difficult out of them. This time I just used the 5-inch squares "as is". The back of this quilt is a kitchen sink backing -- everything but the kitchen sink is there.
Quilting is a free motion loop-d-loop. It is a good thing that I used a lightweight batting (Quilters Dream Request) as the quilting was fairly dense. This amount of quilting on a thicker bat would have resulted in a stiffer quilt.

Strip Twist Quilt of Valor
This Quilt of Valor started with a Moda Jelly Roll in red, white, and blue. The pattern, Strip Twist, is from Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville.com site and is much easier than it looks. The important thing, I found, is to be very aware of your values: light, medium, and dark.
After popping the Pajama Quilter DVD (Dawn Ramirez).into the player, I decided that "dwirling" was a good overall pattern to use on this quilt. Dwirling resembles a topographical map and complements all the straight lines of the piecing in this top.

Hugs and Kisses - March

Socks for Joey
The weather is getting a bit too warm for knitting with wool so these are probably the last socks until fall. One of the 'boys' at work really likes the socks I make so I will be gifting these to him. The second pair vaguely resemble boa constrictors in color don't they?

Failure in the Kitchen
This doesn't happen very often, but there was a dismal failure in the kitchen recently. In an attempt for a healthier lifestyle I have eschewed pork and beef. To this end, new recipes have found their way into my kitchen. This recipe looked good and I wanted to try it. I defrosted the pound (or so) of ground turkey, added the coarsely ground black beans, along with garlic powder, diced onions and parsley. O, and one egg. Patties were made and then Georged (as in George Foreman Grill).
When the lid was lifted at the end of the cooking time four out of six burgers split in half . Oops! What to do? Not wanting to throw it out, that would be wasteful, I wrapped the two whole patties in plastic wrap and further crumbled the rest. I 'flash' froze it and put it into a freezer bag and to be used like crumbled ground beef.
It tastes good but did not hold up as a patty. I do not have a food processor so I used my blender to 'chop' the black beans. I think my blender is starting to go to appliance heaven because it starts out at one speed and goes to high speed all by itself. My 'coarsely ground' black beans were more of a puree. Do you supposed it was too wet to hold up to Georging?

I am remiss
remiss [rɪˈmɪs]adj (postpositive)
And they included this neat pattern too!
Sometimes it DOES pay to be oblivious. Thanks Lynda and Nancy.
1. lacking in care or attention to duty; negligent
I made a comment on Imagine the Possibilities blog from the Great American Quilt Factory about applique. Lynda had asked what type of applique we did and I commented that I was a "totally prepared type of gal". Imagine my surprise when I won a drawing because I didn't even know I was entering. LOL! My prize was an autographed copy of their best selling (and now out-of-print) book Joy to the World. What a gem this is with the patterns for Christmas quilts, place mats, napkins, stockings and more. And don't forget about some of the delicious recipes!
