Quilt Show - Batiks

As always, the photos are clickable for enlargements.

Here is a stunning Lone Star done in batiks. Notice how it breaks into the border?

This uses preprinted panels from New Zealand and Zippy Designs Paper Pieced Stained Glass Blocks. I just love the color in this one.

Batik Medallla This is my favorite of all the contemporary quilts at the show. This photo just doesn't do it justice either. That center mendalla is purple. I think this might have been made using a wedge ruler. Any ideas?

  2. thanks for sharing the photos, I think that lone star is beautiful and I have NEVER liked lonestar quilts. It gives the effect of a huge mariners compass. Amazing what different fabric can do for a pattern.

  5. Paula - I saw your post in bloglines first, which shows the pictures much bigger than in your blog. I'm so glad I did, because all of these quilts are gorgeous!
Yes, the first thing I noticed in the Lone Star was the borders. Because the lone star by itself just isn't hard enough.
The mandalla - I'm not sure how it is made, it reminds me of the book Bella Bella quilts which has all sorts of beautiful complicated designs.

  7. Hi Paula!

Love the pictures! The center medallion quilt looks like Norah McMeeking's technique from her book Bella Bella Quilts. I took a class from her last year and learned her technique which uses freezer paper founation piecing.

The book is wonderfully inspirational and full of eye candy :)

  9. The quilts are stunning. Sorry don't know how the mendalla was done but I bet there is a neat trick to it.

The medallion one is Bella Bella Venice Rose and it is paper pieced. I just finished one.

The quilt that was your favorite contempory that you thought was done with a wedge ruler is Venice Rose from the book Bella Bella Quilts by Norah McMeeking.
