4SQS-Summer

I thought and thought about this quilt. I stalked researched my swap partner's blog for her likes and dislikes. What does summer mean to me? Hot weather, gardens, green lawns, birds chirping, those nasty crickets, the 4th of July, fireworks, sparklers, running through sprinklers, picnics in the park, family reunions.

When I got to the family reunions everything seemed to fall into place. I remember one extended family picnic as a small child that was held in the neighborhood park. The picnic tables were covered with flannel backed tablecloths and tables groaned under the weight of all that homemade good food. The cousins ran around playing tag and the men pitched horseshoes. And so, this little quilt reflects faith, family and memories.

Each scrap of fabric in this quilt brought about a memory. As I was hand quilting it I thought about where the fabrics had been used before. The fabric for this patch was used in Niece's wedding quilt. This fabric is what is left from a blouse I made for myself in high school. O and there is a small bit of fabric from this quilt and another from that quilt and the background fabrics are from the Homespun BOM blocks. Such pleasant memories.

When I had finished piecing the top I realized that it was vaguely patriotic. Which went along with the 4th of July mentioned above. My favorite patriotic song is actually a poem and I used a bit of it in the center of the quilt. I hope this small bit of patriotism does not upset or offend my swap partner.

It is going to be hard to send this quilt out. But even though it doesn't really fit my swap partner's decor, she is going to get it anyway, I made it for her.

  7. I've noticed that about myself as well - I can look at someone's blog, and yet the quilt I want to make for that person doesn't quite fit the blog. Hopefully it fits the person though.

This is a beautiful quilt - I am sure it will be loved by the recipient.

  16. Paula ~ Thanks for the info about this little quilt! I had thought it looked familiar....guess what? I have this book and haven't looked at in a few years. It was squeezed between several larger books on my quilting book shelf! So, I am set to make this!
    Thanks again!

  17. First let me say thank you!! I will send you a private e-mail and post on it on my blog too, but I wanted to post on your blog how absolutley THRILLED I am with this beautiful quilt. I am VERY patriotic, so I was quite happy with the beautiful saying in the middle. The scrappy look is my favorite of all quilts, so it certainly fits my decor! After reading about how the different fabrics have such meaning to you, it takes on a whole new life for me also. I am such a traditional, sentimental girl that nothing could have been better!!! It will hang in a place of honor where I can see it everyday. Oh, and your handquilting is wonderful!!! Thank you Paula!!!!
