Here is a quick post of a recent completion. This is the large Messenger Bag mentioned in the last post. It all started with a kit purchased at the last
Denver Quilt Festival from
Sew Batik. Since this was for me, I customized the pockets. Right behind the flap is a row of pockets that hold a pen or two, my calendar and either a paperback book or my e-reader. On the inside of the front is a single pocket for my flash/thumb drives. Yes, I have more than one. The inside back has made-to-fit pockets for a cell phone and my wallet. The rest of the bag carries whatever: laptop, knitting, lunch, water bottle. I love the way this rides on my hip.
The kit included the outer batik, the inner batik (lining), the backing for the quilting and the pattern. I had to add the batting to be able to quilt the outer batik to the white backing before cutting and then constructing the bag.
On another note, the sewing machine is safely ensconced in it's cabinet and machine stitching can now commence.
Great bag - isn't it nice to be able to customize it for your use.

ReplyDeleteDarling bag! Loved your previous post on the reds (who knew?) and the quilt is darling on that bed! "Modern" quilters rave over bed sheets for backing. They didn't get the old messages we were told and claim they work great. I think it was hand stitching through the thread count that made quilters nuts. A lot of my charity quilting friends buy them on sale and use big ones to back many donation quilts at a time.

ReplyDeleteGosh Paula, that's a great bag. I love the fabrics and the clasps you chose totally work. I really liked looking and your quilting. The whole thing looks like it was a treat to make. You know, seriously, a bag like this would make for a great holiday gift or something like that, too. Who wouldn't want one like this? WOW!

ReplyDeleteI've been thinking myself of switching to a messenger bag. My shoulders and back would probably love me a little more. Have you noticed a difference?

ReplyDeleteSounds/looks like a super useful bag! My sister always customizes her inside pockets too - and she usually adds a zipper or two somewhere! I would say - use the sheets as backings if you are machine quilting, but not if you are handquilting. And you might want to consider adding your binding by machine too instead of hand stitching it down to the back. My first quilts had old blankets inside of them for batting - recycling is the true spirit of quilting. Cheers! Evelyn
