Celebrating Love

228560988

In 1946, The Loveland Stamp Club started a Valentine remailing program in Loveland Colorado. In 1947, Postmaster Elmer Ivers, Chamber of Commerce President Ted W. Thompson and wife Mabel Thompson continued the program. Since 1947, literally millions of valentines with Cupid's hand stamped message are remailed from Loveland, Colorado and more than 200,000 valentines are expected to be stamped and remailed from Loveland this year.

Guy Lombardo recorded the song "There's a Lovely Lake in Loveland" and in 1950 was designated honorary mayor.

Starting in 1962 a high school senior girl has been chosen to represent the program and the city as "Miss Loveland Valentine". She makes personal appearances representing the City of Loveland around the state of Colorado, including an appearance at the Colorado State Legislature and a personal visit with the Governor are just two of the highlights in her busy schedule.

There are lots of activities scheduled : art shows and receptions, breakfast, 2 different dances & dinners, hot air balloon rally, poetry reading, weddings, and a parade!

Valentine's Day in Loveland is a big deal. The Thompson Valley Rotary Club also paints messages on red hearts that are then wired to lamp poles on 4 of the major thoroughfares that include two state highways. This year, I bought a heart. On the form, I wrote where I work and asked if it would be possible to have the heart somewhere close. Close? They hung it right in front of the studio! You can't miss it.

You gotta love a town with heart.

  3. What a great way to celebrate Valentine's Day!

I played Pick-Up Sticks as child. I used to have on of those containers for my DMC floss. I'm glad I never spilled it. But at least you got to organize it. Would you have organized it anyway?

  12. How great that it was so close! I remember when I lived in Denver, that they always gave out the address to Loveland to do that. I always wondered how that worked.

  17. Loveland CO.....just down the road from where we left about $125,000! (our son went to CSU) When I bought my CSU coffee mug, DH reminded me how much it took to get that! I love the heart - so appropo for the town! Thanks for visiting my blog - the "applique" you asked about was a Thimbleberries fabric I picked up on the way home from CO one year.
