Viva Las Vegas Quilt Shops!

Did you miss me?

CarGuy and I flew to Las Vegas for a few days to play. While he stayed at the casino I went on a Quilt Tour of Las Vegas! Yes, you read that right. A Quilt Tour. It was so much fun! I had decided that since those slot machines and video poker machines know when I'm coming and are out to get me, that I would out fox them! I spent my money on FABRIC! Luscious, wonderful quilt fabric.

We flew into Las Vegas on Monday and arrived around 5:30pm. Tuesday started quite early with a wakeup phone call from the operator. Had to get up early to fortify myself with food and coffee for a full day of shopping, doncha know. I was picked up outside the hotel in a stretch limo at 8:00am. And then onto the next hotel and the next for more quilters! We had a full tour of 12 quilters from all over the US.

Our first stop was at the Christmas Goose on West Sahara. This is a nice little shop tucked into a small shopping center. For those of you who like homespuns, this is the place to go! There was a whole section of them. I managed to find a couple of fabrics in the clearance area that reminded me of the taupes (but aren't Daiwabo).

After leaving the Christmas Goose we went to the Fabric Boutique on West Charleston Blvd. Mmmmmm... there was a mighty fine sale going on! Any, and I mean any, fabric with purple in it was 30% off. One quilter bought an oriental that only had a tiny little bit of purple on the collar of one of the geisha -- 30% off. This is where I got a large amount of a purple fabric. I mean, how could I resist? I was also on the lookout for a light batik on this trip and I found one here: 4 7/8 yards (yes, I bought the rest of the bolt). Our tour had a 20% discount at this store too.

We were fed a wonderful soup, salad and bread for lunch at Sweet Tomatoes. And then, on to more shopping!

Our third stop of the day was to Centennial Quilts on West Tropical Pkwy. This is another small shop, but big on personality! Owned by a mother and daughter, the shop is stuffed with the most gorgeous bright fabrics. And their selection of black and white fabrics was to die for! On my way to the loo, I snapped this photo of one of the quilts on the walls. This was a small wallhanging that measured about 24" square. The petals are made of prairie points and double-sided 45 degree diamonds and don't you just love the ruched flower in the center. This shop is where I saw the cutest fusible appliqué pattern: Vegas Chick by Carol Bruce of Needlesongs Patterns.

Our final stop of the day was at Nancy's Quilt Shop on Buffalo Dr. What a shopping experience this was with over 7,000 bolts of fabric. I wanted it all. There was even yarn and yes, I bought some lovely Noro Kureyon yarn. This is where I got my only pattern and, of course, more fabric. This time I bought some fabric that will work well with some ethnic fabrics I already have. The pattern is called BG and I'll make up the pattern to show you -- this is a wonderful pattern to use up some of those large scale prints that are lurking in the stash.

At the end of the day, we were given the opportunity to have our purchases shipped home and since that is what I did, I don't have an image to show you of my purchases. When the package arrives I'll let you know.

All in all, I highly recommend this tour. For a quilter, it is one of the better things to do in Vegas. And in case you are wondering, the first image is of downtown Las Vegas -- The Fremont Street Experience.

  1. Sounds like you had a great time. I got to go to three shops with my friend last month - Christmas Goose, Quiltique and Fiddlesticks. I used the tour website to make my selections.

  2. Oh my, I am jealous. These sound like great stores, and great sales. You are right, going on a quilt tour guarantees that you will win, and is more fun and inspirational. The picture of that quilt is wonderful. Making a three dimensional thing like that is on my to do list too. It is going to be a while.

  6. Sounds like a great trip! Love that beautiful flower you snapped on the way to the loo. Regarding the green spikey fabric in my blocks (you commented at my blog), that would make GREAT hair for appliques! When you use it that way I want to see your creation.

  8. I've done your Vegas tour and it is a great one!! Lucky you - it has been a long time for us. We stayed at the Nugget (Fremont Street) several times - in fact we were there the weekend Fremont Street "opened" to a rodeo theme. Every time we have gone, DH has always taken me quilt shop hopping - said it was cheaper than letting me hang out at the casinos! VBG!
