Part of the alterations I had to do before I injured Bernie was shortening a red formal five inches. This dress will be worn by a bride's maid on May 18 so there was not a lot of time to get it done. There were 4!! layers to shorten: the lining, the crinoline of black net, the actual skirt of crepe backed satin, and then the curved over skirt/panel in the front of both the lining fabric and the crepe backed satin. Bernie did an admirable job of it. All it took was two different feet -- the narrow hemmer foot and the overlock foot. I got the dress shortened in three hours.

Wow - that is one gorgeous gown. I must say you are quite brave to take on such alterations. I say this because I can only work with cottons that are intended to remain flat and mostly square *s*
ReplyDeleteYou are braver than me - doing that sort of thing (on that sort of dress) would give me kittens in case I made it too short or ruined it in some other way.

ReplyDeleteThat's a lot of work, and I'm with the others - I'd be too afraid of ruining it, probably because the probability would be high that I would. It looks like a gorgeous dress. How brave of the bride to use red in the spring! It reminds me of when I was a little girl, I told my mom I wanted wear a red dress at my wedding and she said absolutely not! But she did say I could change to red for the reception.

Oh my.........slippery fabric and layers. Good for you and in only 3 hours! I don't do that anymore - quilts are a little less intimidating! :>)
