Froggie Quilt

I have a finish! Woohoo!

This is my version of a 4-patch posy quilt. Instead of cutting out squares I cut 4 stacked strips the size I needed and then cut squares and then quarter squares. The hard way to do it I have since figured out. The original fabric was that bright one with the Amazonian tree frogs on it. I used the (4-patch posy) stack-n-whack square in the center of a block I found in one of Georgia Bonesteel's books. She called it the Mexican Star, but if you Google it you will see a lot of different blocks called that. I did 2 versions of the block so that the black alternated. Take a look at the closeup and you'll see what I'm talking about.

I have had this cut out and kitted for a long, long time. How long? I'm not quite certain. I do know that I was going to make this for my niece's graduation present. (Different niece, BTW, than the one in the previous post.)
Let's see, she graduated high school: no quilt.
She graduated college: no quilt.
She got her master's degree: no quilt.
And she was just accepted for 2 more years to work on her doctorate.

I figured I had better get it done as I was running out of time even though I still have 2 years to go, but it's DONE!

I was working on this at the guild's retreat last year and one of the ladies asked me "Are you SURE you want to use that blue, dear?" Well, yeah, I was sure. Aside from not wanting to buy more fabric, I was a long way from a quilt store. And this was fabric that was left from her sister's wedding quilt. BTW, I still have about 2 yards of this left! It's the kind of fabric that lasts a loooong time.

I had it quilted in a jungle leaf all-over panto. What do you think of the label? I removed names to protect the innocent. O and if you were wondering what I like, this is pretty indicative of my taste.

  9. It's a great quilt and a graduation is a graduation . . . maybe it's because a quilt was not yet made that your niece continued to pursue her education *s* At least it would be fun to think that.

  12. Congrats on the finish and your niece is going to be thrilled to get this. Who cares about how long it took for that to happen as it is done now. Gotta agree with the others, Paula---the blue really makes the quilt. I love the setting you used for the 4-patch part of the block---it's inspired!

I have made a Mexican Star block as part of a quilt as you go section of a raffle quilt years ago. The participants got to pick their choice of a selection of star blocks and given the fabric required to make said block all in shades of blue (it may have been kitted up, can't remember) We were to layer and hand quilt each section and then it was joined by the organizers. Pic somewhere in my blog archives.

  16. I think the blue is perfect. It really makes the design stand out. What did that lady know? She is probably one of the quilt police - boring.

  18. I think the blue looks great with the froggy quilt!! Funny how some people really need to offer up their opinion whether solicited or not.

    Great label :))

I hope all goes well with your aunt - it is always a hard transition to move into a care facility.
