The Challenge

My friend (MagicLady) and I are doing a small challenge. She and I hammered out the guidelines on Friday and she emailed them to me today. I have her permission to post them, so if you are so inclined, you can work along with us. The *ahem* polka dot fabric is pictured in this post: The Quilter: Goodies from Vegas.

Poetry In Motion
Quilt Challenge

Take a line from a poem or song and create a quilt that expresses it. Your quilt may be representational or abstract. Your quilt may be any shape but the total perimeter must be between 48” and 180”.

• Techniques must include both piecing and appliqué
• The focus fabric will be 1 yard of some god-awful (Oh, excuse me. I mean: challenging) polka dot thing that TheQuilter picked out during her trip to Las Vegas (my son wanted to know if she was mad at me or what when he saw it). The whole yard must be used but it some may be included on the back or in the binding.
• Each quilter must add *at least* three additional fabrics
• Work on the quilt can only be done by hand or by Featherweight 221 machine
• You must add a minimum of one additional technique to the quilt
• The Due Date is July 4, 2007; if either quilter feels they can’t make this date, they must notify the other by May 28, 2007 (Memorial Day)

Let the designing begin!

Update: I just searched and found the fabric online. Guess what? It is in April Cornell's line of fabric for Moda called the Sonnet Collection.

  1. The only "bad" thing about this is the reminder that I do own a FW - My excuse dujour for not sewing is the fact that my Pfaff is in for repairs & Maintenance...

  2. that challenge is definitely challenging! Although the line from the poem, song, etc is interesting, the polka dots and need for applique are not my cup of tea. I look forward to seeing what you and the Magic Lady come up with.

    have fun!!

  3. This does sound like a great challenge. I just have so many things to finish that I won't be able to join you - that, and that I don't have a Featherweight 221. And I don't have a yard of that pretty polkadot fabric. Although I do have a fat quarter of a similar fabric with a purple background. I found it on the shelf, which means it was earmarked for a special project, which I no longer remember.

  5. I love the polka dot fabric. But I don't have a featherweight and I don't take my applique class until the end of July.

I guess I'll have to sit this challenge out. I will work the challenge vicariously through you if that's OK.
