It's kind of scary to think that Kool Aid (a child's drink) can permanently dye wool. I do not know if it dyes cotton. Somebody out there has probably tried it. Anyone?
I thought I had thoroughly wet the yarn. But obviously, I had not since it 'dyed' in a mottled fashion. It should knit up nice.
It will colour cotton, but not as intensely nor as permanently as it dyes wool. The dye reacts with (I believe) the protein structure of animal fibres (wool, silk, hair) but since cotton is plant based (carbohydrate) the reaction isn't there.
ReplyDeleteI think. ;o)
That's beautiful! Makes you wonder what it does to our digestive tract!
ReplyDeleteI like the mottled look of the wool and I am sure its going to make up really pretty. I had no idea that koolaide dyed anything other than my carpet.
ReplyDeleteI bet folks would pay a premium for the 'mottled' look. I've got instructions around here somewhere for using Koolaid to dye wool yard goods . . . never thought of yard.
ReplyDeletecool beans! that looks like fun. any instructions available on the innernets that you know about??
ReplyDeleteVery interesting! Instructions?
ReplyDeleteI think it looks great - the mottled look adds character. Great idea to overdye the socks as well.
ReplyDeleteThat yarn is beautiful! I like the mottled look a lot!
ReplyDeleteHey Dorothy is one smart gal! Glad to have an answer to that question right away cause I have wondered the same thing. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLove the yarn...could you do that again? Lol...it would make a great felted wool bag.
Sheesh - thanks to Vacation Bible School I drank a ton of Kool-Aid when I was a kid. This is kind of disturbing!
