My Mess of a House

Here is my home office. I am currently dismantling the bookshelves that you see in the photo. As I remove a book I add it to my library in Library Thing. I love Library Thing. I suppose it's the geeky analytical in me. Can you see that mass of wood on the floor? Those are the new shelves that attach to the studs in the walls. No more saggy particle board shelve! Woohoo!

I have an old library table that will replace the 2 short file cabinets that hold up the Formica countertop 'desk'. The 2 short cabinets will be replaced with a 4 drawer cabinet. One of the 2 drawer file cabinets will find a new home in the sewing room along with one of the bookcases. Currently, I have a shorter 3 shelf bookcase (same brand) in the sewing room that is stuffed to overflowing. CarGuy said he needed a short open-faced cabinet in the shed and I asked if a bookcase would work. Yes, so the shorter bookcase is moving out to the shed. I have books every where. They are in heaps on the guest bed, stacks in the spare chairs, piles on the floors.

What stays? The computer(s), this antique secretary, and office chair. O. And the books of course. I will show pics of the completed room. This is my fall project.

And CarGuy has decided that now is the time to start a small little project of his own. He has emptied several of the kitchen drawers onto the counter and has been experimenting on the best way to refinish the kitchen cupboards. I haven't complained, because frankly the cupboards really need some work.

Between the home office rework, the piles of books, furniture in odd spots awaited permanent locations and kitchen paraphanalia all over the kitchen, my house currently looks like a whirlwind hit it.

  1. Oh, I hate the mess it creates when you decide to reorganize, redo, rearrange! Of course, once everything's done, it's amazing. It's the "just be patient" phase that can make a person nuts! I can't wait to see the after pics!

  2. It is inconvenient when stuff isn't where you expect it to be, or is all over the place, but the temporary pain shows the anticipation and will be so worth it. I look forward to seeing your progress.

  3. I sure do understand how this works. Everything looks real bad before it looks much prettier. Usually worth the pain though, LOL, you'll be a happy girl when it's over. The kitchen cabinets could take a long while to do though. I thought I would like glass doors until I had my cabinet doors off for a month and realized just how much I don't want to see! Will look forward to seeing the final product.

  4. Hubby has always hoped to one day have a room that can be filled with nothing but books, a comfy chair and a lamp. I think he might never come out if he had it *s*

  5. Hopefully refinishing the kitchen cabinets will not be as disruptive as replacing them. We did that four years ago. I cooked out of a microwave on a folding table in the dining room for three months. It was a long spring. May all your projects be finished quickly!

  6. Thanks for directing me to Library Thing. I think I'm in love! I used to have all my books in a database, but multiple house moves, computer crashes and disorganized longterm storage in unlabeled boxes let my books get out of control. I will be cataloging them soon. This looks like a winner!

  9. How well I understand. And what makes it even worse, is once you finish one room, it makes the others look bad, so then you have to redo them. But its so nice once a room is finished!

  10. We still have piles of books stacked up here and there even though our remodeling was finished in June.
    Good luck.
