Quilting Away!

DSC_0823-th
The Double 4-Patch is progressing at a rapid pace. Still on a mission to use what I have, I pieced the batting together for the quadrants. I am doing the machine quilting on my Bernina using my favorite technique from Marti Michell’s book, Machine Quilting in Sections. Here is a link to a video on YouTube about this book.
Like I said, I use my 1080 Bernina to do the quilting and the piecing on the batting. When I do the batting, I use my #10 Edge Foot. Can you see the flange there between the two pieces of batting? I smooch (technical term) the two pieces together in front of the foot and the flange keeps them just the right amount apart to stitch. The stitch I use is one that is designed for butting two items together; I lengthen the stitch so it doesn’t pucker.

Then it was on to basting. I keep my basting table set up in my unfinished basement. One of these days, I really want to try the hand basting with the boards, but for now, I used my old stand-by method with the safety pins and my old banquet table. I got all four quadrants basted on Friday. Yipee!

After using the table as-is the first time,I raised it with PVC pipe. If you do this you need to pop the caps off the legs. I can baste quite a bit using this method and my knees and back thank me for raising the table. Stay tuned.

  1. I like that you too piece batting... do it all the time as I hate wasting anything.

I raised my work table with bed risers... makes all the difference in the world!

  4. Well, you're neat! I smash the batting together and stitch it by hand with big stitches, using hand-quilting thread.

  7. I only hand baste when I am hand quilting. I pieced my batting for a quilt recently too. Such a rush when you can use what you have!

  8. Very nice. I love to have those table "raisers" if you don't have a table that is a good height. A few years ago I had a really wild hair and bought myself an extra high table with drop sides, so when it is open it is 9+ feet long. Huge, but great when it is the size I need. 4 patches looking good.

  9. Great progress...keep plugging away and soon you'll be done. It looks good.

I am saving remnant pieces of batting for such an occasion I think I have a baby quilt (twin size) coming up that will fit the bill.

Keep on using that stash. ~ksp

  10. I piece leftover batting together too. Why waste it???

One of the reasons I got the midarm and frame is because I HATED basting on my hands and knees. I'm a super lazy quilter. I would never have survived as a quilter back in the day. LOL.

this looks super! Marti Mitchell is a super smart gal. Bust that stash, baby!

  12. I piece my batting too if need be, and I used to use risers like that at my old house. Hubby made me high counters in my sewing-room here.. Now I bring them along on quilt retreats... Sure saves your back, and I've been there and done that with hand basting on the floor... no more of that nonsense!! Only hand-baste if I am going to hand-quilt a quilt now. Love spray basting!!!

  13. Thank you for the photo of the leg extension! I've been telling my DH that this could be done with these tables but he wasn't convinced. Your photo did the trick and my table now has the leg extensions. Many thanks!

  14. I have a four patch that has been handed down in my family. They are timeless, and I love how you have used the fabric and colors!

  15. A #10 Edge foot you say?? I've never heard of it, but it does look useful from your photo and I do have a Bernina. ;) Now I'll need to google or youTube to find out more and also put it on my wish list for Birthday or Christmas.

When else do you use it?

    Love from Texas! ~bonnie
