OTN: Oct 5, 2012

There are two projects on needles today. There is another Wingspan scarf using KnitPicks Chroma Fingering Sock Yarn in a discontinued colorway called North Woods. The other project is using the alpaca yarn that was over dyed using Black Cherry Kool Aid, remember that yarn? I am making a sweater for myself using the Mama Bear Seamless Sweater pattern.

Made in America

I busted my yarn swift. Honestly, with our dry climate, if wood is not conditioned it will dry out. That is what happened to my swift: the wood on the carved wooden nut that holds the umbrella-like section open just split in half. Boo hoo. :(

I asked if it could be repaired and then waited patiently for about a week but nothing around Casa del Quilter seems to be done in a timely manner unless The Quilter does it herself. After a bit of research, I found a new swift at The Oregon Woodworker. Yes, made in the U.S.A. It is a different style than the old one but I like it much better. It can accommodate larger skeins of yarn and is quieter.

Oh, and the old swift? Still not repaired.

Fiddler

Leaving the public library yesterday, I heard fiddle music on the air. An elderly gentleman was sitting on a park bench playing an Irish jig. Toe tapping music that enlivened the day.

I have always wanted to learn how to play a fiddle. I even have my mother's fiddle, but she called it a violin. It is in bad shape which is really shameful. At least the strings were loosened before it was put away, but the bridge has come unglued. See it laying there: about the middle right of the photo. The bow is sad.

I wish I could find a teacher.

Katydid

I always carry a camera with me because I don't know when something will catch my interest. This bug was resting on the hinge side of the storm door. Look at how transparent the wings are in the shadow. What in the world is this bug? Google to the rescue. It's a Katydid, did you know that? On further investigation, I found this audio clip of the sound the Katydid's make.
